Organisation 

SNV Ethiopia has four portfolio teams of advisers:

  •  the National Portfolio team, based in Addis Ababa and operating in Oromia and at the national level
  • the Central Portfolio team, based in Addis Ababa and operating around Addis Ababa
  • the Southern Portfolio, based in Awassa and working in the Southern Nations Nationalities and People’s region
  • the Northern Portfolio, based in Bahir Dar and working in the Amhara region.

Management Team

Jan Vloet, Country Director

Jan’s experience in the development sector spans over 25 years, with his career taking him from Latin America, to Africa, the Balkans, and most recently to Asia.  He first joined SNV as an advisor in Ethiopia in 1988 and has since held a wide range of positions within the organisation. Jan has headed country programmes in Zimbabwe and Montenegro. More recently, he was the Head of Strategy and Partnerships for the Asia regional programme. He moved to Ethiopia as country director in October 2011.

Jan’s diverse roles and his long experience within the organisation has enabled him to develop a uniquely comprehensive perspective on SNV, our work and our history, with his most recent role spearheading Asia’s transition away from full subsidy making him realise what is possible within SNV’s new context.

He also has a passion for localisation within SNV’s programmes, believing that development should be owned and driven locally, as well as an on-going interest in public policy and the role of government in development.

Daniel Truneh –  Portfolio Coordinator, Southern Portfolio

Daniel holds a Masters and Bachelors Degree in International law. He has 13 years of professional experience in the fields of human rights protection, public and economic diplomacy, international trade, investment and tourism promotion, as well as Humans Resources and Project Management.

Daniel worked as senior expert in private sector development at the Ethiopian Embassies in London and Stockholm promoting trade, investment, tourism contributing to significant business improvement between Ethiopia and the Scandinavian countries. He is an effective communicator with strong client care skills and cross group collaboration willing to pick up and develop new skills. Daniel has "a can-do" attitude, with the ability to build trust and credibility with managers and employees and has proven track record of establishing ties with key decision makers. He has the ability to lead and manage a small group in a highly task driven environment and fosters the personal and professional growth by encouraging staff to act independently and effectively. Through training, he has developed broad knowledge in areas of coaching and leadership development.

Daniel joined SNV in 2004 as the Portfolio Coordinator for the Southern Portfolio. He is also responsible for the water, sanitation and hygiene programme in Ethiopia.  His passion is the respect for human rights without which development is unattainable.

Fantahun Wakie – Portfolio Coordinator, Northern Portfolio

Fantahun Wakie has a Masters Degree in Organizational Development and a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Engineering.

Fantahun worked for the Ethiopian Ministry of Agriculture as land use planning and land use evaluation expert for six years. He also worked for the first environmental association of Ethiopia called LEM-Ethiopia. His experience in working with both grass-root and national level organizations in both the government and civil society sector has given him proper insight in how to deal with complex institutional development topics.

His main areas of expertise lie in organisational development, land use planning, natural resource management, gender, leadership development, and strategic planning. His work, based on three-year-long action research, about development impact of ‘collective capability and freedom’ that was presented at the international conference of Human Development Capability Approach in 2006 at Groningen University has won the privilege of becoming teaching material at Harvard University Kennedy School of Governance.

Fantahun joined SNV Ethiopia in 1997. Throughout the years he worked as Sustainable Land Use Specialist, Organisational Development Advisor, Water Sanitation and Hygiene Advisor. With his long term employment within SNV he safeguards the institutional memory and the organisational network of SNV Ethiopia. In July 2008, Fantahun became the Portfolio Coordinator for the new portfolio covering Amhara and Tigray, with duty station Bahir Dar. 

Phomolo Maphosa, Portfolio Coordinator, Central Portfolio

Phomolo holds a BSc in Psychology and a Masters in Business Administration degree, specialising in strategic management. Phomolo holds over 18 years professional experience mainly in the fields of change management, policy influence, natural resource management, public sector strategic planning, civic participation, local governance, gender, multi-stakeholder processes, lobby and advocacy.

Phomolo joined SNV Ethiopia in August 2009 as the Portfolio Coordinator for Central Portfolio. She is also the head of renewable Energy and the focal person for vocational skills development and managing for results. Before joining SNV Ethiopia she was a Portfolio Coordinator and acting Country Director for Zimbabwe. She has worked in SNV as a local governance Advisor and advisor in the water sector. Before joining SNV Phomolo worked for USAID as a Training Officer and ZimTrust as an Area manager, and monitoring and evaluation Manager in a community based natural resource management programme. Her previous experience has provided her extensive and solid experience in the advisory practice and in management. Phomolo’s strengths lie in management and leadership, partnership development, resource mobilisation, networking, negotiation, and team building. As a leader, she is known for her attitude of inquiry, focus on impact and developing a reflective practice.

Her current interests are in the renewable energy sector, where she has a passion of ensuring access to energy for the poor women and men in Ethiopia through transformation of animal waste into energy.
