Renewable Energy
With 85% of Nepal's population living in rural areas of which 90% still use fuel wood to generate energy, it is increasingly important to pursue off-grid energy solutions for the future. SNV has been working in the renewable energy sector in Nepal since 1992, promoting market-orientated initiatives among government, private and NGO stakeholders.
With over 20 years of experience in the renewable energy sector in Nepal, SNV has been able to develop a deep understanding of the benefits to local populations from renewable energy technologies (RETs) and the importance of maintaining performance of these technologies on the ground by engaging the private sector at the local level.
Our Objectives:
- Improve access to energy services
- Improve income generation and employement
- Bring reliability and stability to energy supply
Across all Renewable Energy applications, SNV's practical approach emphasises the delivery of essential benefits at the local level, including improved health and sanitation, environmental protection, good governance and social inclusion, and poverty reduction through income generation and employment opportunities.
Our Programmes:
-
Rural and Renewable Energy Programme: SNV in Nepal has collaborated with the Alternative Energy Promotion Centre (AEPC) to provide capacity development support for RE sector development in Nepal. SNV assists AEPC to substantially increase efficiency and effectiveness of the Renewable Energy Programme executed under the leadership of AEPC on behalf of Ministry of Environment (MOEnv) maximising the number of (rural) households utilising renewable energy technologies (RETs) for their energy needs replacing the traditional energy sources as well as generating additional income from the installed RETs. SNV in Nepal continues to support scaling up of biogas and assist partners in innovative new RETs. SNV in Nepal is committed to facilitate, support and develop capacity of RE sector actors: private sector, NGOs and government as well as promote localisation and knowledge development. In all our interventions decentralisation, governance, gender and social inclusion are integral but cross cutting components.
-
Improved Cook Stoves Programme: SNV has initiated, together with AEPC, to develop a pilot ICS project with Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Programme of Activities (PoA) in a cluster in western part of Nepal, which is not only the poorest part of Nepal but also has few units of modern cooking solutions like ICS and biogas. Conceptually, this is being developed as a multi-country PoA so that the investment made initially in Nepal can benefit many more people in similar countries in Asia or even beyond and the carbon credit buyers find it an attractive deal, in terms of the high volume of the credit. This pilot project which is expected to be one of the most viable CDM programmes in renewable energy sector anticipates to install, a total of 200,000 units within 5 years period and by 2021, around 263,000 CERs (Certified Emission Reductions) will be available, cumulatively. The programme is implemented following the national ICS dissemination modality within the framework of national RE programme of AEPC. |
