Livestock

Livestock is an important asset throughout South Sudan. It's the main livelihood of more than 80% (11.2 million people) of the total population of South Sudan. However livestock production and marketing is faced with a number of challenges. Despite this, there are also a number of opportunities that can be exploited to enhance livestock production and marketing in south Sudan. Emerging livestock trade routes, emerging urban markets, establishment of a common currency, and the diminishing role of the military in livestock trade are creating vibrant opportunities for the private sector to engage in livestock marketing.

SNV promotes livestock related enterprises and investment by working with Ministries of Animal Resources and Fisheries at national and state levels, the private sector and producer groups. We facilitate a multi-stakeholder platform on livestock development, extension systems capacity building in livestock production and marketing, livestock market infrastructure development, small and micro enterprise development, and livelihoods recovery support programmes.

In South Sudan, SNV:

  • Supports livestock products value chain analysis and development.
  • Supports the Ministry of Animal Resources and Fisheries in livestock policy development.
  • Works with partners (Farm Africa, Vet Care, Ministry of Animal Resources and Fisheries) to enhance livestock market development.

In South Sudan’s livestock sector, SNV has worked with IFAD, South Sudan Ministry of Animal Resources and Fisheries, Caritas Switzerland, State Ministry of Animal Resources and Fisheries (Eastern Equatoria and Jongolei), the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlnds in Abyei, Farm Africa and the European Union.
