Utrecht, 17 October 2008 - SNV participated at the World Poverty Day public event organised by EEN Campaign on Friday, October 17 in Utrecht. SNV director Dirk Elsen was one of the speakers at the event, stressing the urgency to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.
EEN started the Dutch Stand Up Against Poverty on World Poverty Day, together with organizations in more than 100 countries. Stand Up is a global mobilisation to end poverty and inequality. Worldwide, almost 117 million people have Stood Up Against Poverty. That’s two percent of the world population, which means a new world record! In the Netherlands, 12.953 people participated.
Dirk Elsen and ICCO Program Director Jan van Doggenaar were speakers at the event. After the Stand-up, Dutch TV celebrities participated in a race against poverty, using empty shopping carts to symbolize poverty.
