Forest Products

Forest Products is a new sub-sector for SNV Bhutan – well the name at least is new! SNV has actually been working in Collaborative Forest Management for many years in areas such as product development, cane and bamboo, lemon grass oil, and the sustainable management of forest resources.
The development and commercialisation of forest products has been identified by the Royal Government of Bhutan as one of the major priorities for poverty alleviation in the 10th Five Year Plan (2008-2013).

Our objectives:
Through forest product development, SNV Bhutan aims to improve production, income and employment opportunities for the poor. This is achieved by working along the entire value chain of forest products including resource management, marketing, and enterprise development; with a special focus on the creation of opportunities for involvement for the poor and disadvantaged. Furthermore, SNV Bhutan also works on the improvement of governance and coordination in the Forest Products sub-sector.

In the Spotlight

In a remote area of Bhutan called Bjoka handicrafts made out of cane and bamboo contribute to almost 70% of the annual monetary income of local farmers. A SNV-study emphasizes the importance of a community-based management of these common resources, in terms of formation of such community groups, sustainable management of the resources, and governance of the community group itself.
