Livestock is a great provider of employment and a source of income for many stakeholders in cattle markets in Niger. This case describes how the National Federation of Pastoralists in Niger (FNEN) sought assistance from SNV in order to create a transparent and sustainable management framework of cattle markets, so as to offer better opportunities for pastoralists to increase their incomes.

Considering the place of cowpea in Niger economy and in family farms – 90% of family farms cultivate cowpea and the pulse is the 4th most important export product - SNV decided in 2007 to engage in the development of this value chain. Several constraints were impeding the development of the value chain: support services are for instance insufficient, and producers and processors have low access to information on market opportunities. SNV therefore facilitated a structuring process of value chain actors, and coordinated various interventions aiming at improving specific aspects of the value chain such as the production of seeds or processing capacities.
