A community-radio based Market Information System to be replicated by SNV DRC.

Saturday, February 20, 2010 12:17 PM

In 2008, SNV Cameroon advisors designed a community-radio based Market Information System (MIS) for Non Timber Forest Products (NTFPs). The system links market place demand and supply thus creating a favourable environment for more equity in the sales of NTFPs.

Previously, the commercialisation of NTFPs was marked by fraud practiced by middle-men who bought from the Baka people at very low prices and sold at extremely high prices in foreign markets. The dramatic impact of the MIS was highly visible when SNV succeeded to bring together 3,500 Baka people, suppliers of the bush mango (Irvingnia gabonensis), with potential markets for their products in Nigeria, leading to marked increases in income for the Baka people. Today, the Baka are gaining commercial experience and more importantly, confidence and equal status with other Cameroonians. Wholesalers are also multiply their margin lines thanks to this system. As an illustration, "since i became involved in the MIS, my business has expanded by 30% - 35%. At first i just sat in front of my warehouse to wait for products but now that my phone number is being broadcast on radios, many producers call me and i buy large quantities at a go". Abdu Nji, an NTFP trader.

For this reason, SNV Democratic Republic of Congo since 2009 has been trying to adapt the MIS to their context.
