Water, sanitation and hygiene

GRADIC. Groupe de Recherche et d’Action pour un Développement Intégré des Communautés de base (Boma, WASH and NTFP). ongradic@yahoo.fr GRADIC works actively in the supply of drinking water to the populations of Bas-Fleuve (in the fields of water and sanitation), the protection of the environment, and for the promotion of Non Timber Forest Products (honey, mfumbwa, safou).

SNHR. Service National d’Hydraulique Rurale. SNHR is a state service in charge of drinking water delivery and water quality control in the rural areas of the country. However, SNHR encounters many difficulties in achieving its objectives. SNV and SNHR have devised a training program that will help SNHR develop the necessary knowledge and capacities.

GMHR. Groupe de Maintenance de l’Hydraulique Rurale gmhr_ong@yahoo.com. GMHR is a NGO dedicated to the better delivery of drinking water in the small town of Kinzau Mvuete. GHMR builds and rehabilitates water points and sanitation systems, trains local technicians and animators, controls the quality of the water and disseminates information about individual and community hygiene rules. Furthermore, GMHR is active in UNICEF’s « Sanitised Village » program.

CEREDECOM. Centre de Recherche pour le Développement Communautaire ceredecom_asbl@yahoo.fr. CEREDECOM is a NGO focused on health, with particular attention to water, sanitation and hygiene. CEREDECOM is active in the building of water delivery infrastructures. In the Cataractes and the Lukaya Districs, CEDERECOM is supported by UNICEF through its « Sanitised Village » program.

Boma Bungu Health Zone zonedesante@yahoo.fr. A Health Zone is a decentralised administrative branch of the health service in Congo. The Health Zone is in charge of all health-related matters in a determined area. In the area covered by the Boma Bungu Health Zone, there is a real problem as far as drinking water availability is concerned. As a result, many people still use the river water, with deleterious consequences for their health. The Health Zone works with the UNICEF « Sanitised Village » program (sanitation). The Boma Bungu Health Zone will be able to play a really important role in improving access to water and hygiene.

UNAPADEC. Union des Associations Paysannes pour le Développement Endogène et Communautaire unapadec@yahoo.fr. UNAPADEC is an association of farmers in the jungle area of Tshela; an area where most of the population’s revenue comes from agriculture. Amongst other things, UNAPADEC tries to (re-) develop the culture of the oil palms (through the creation of palm nursery). UNAPADEC could also participate in the setting up of a Market Information System.

CEADI. Centre d’Encadrement des Actions pour le Développement Intégré. CEADI is an organisation that supports up to 82 local associations of producers in order to increase their production, transformation and commercialisation of palm oil. CEADI could really have a positive impact on the farmers’ production and revenues via the organisation of the value chain and the dissemination of market information.

APROFEL. Association pour la Promotion des Femmes de Lukula. aprofelbascongo@yahoo.fr. APROFEL is a women’s umbrella organisation that supports many diverse associations. APROFEL is active in different palm oil–related activities, one of which aims at structuring the producers’ organisation in the area of Lukula. APROFEL is also in the best position to give technological and business support to producers and their corporations emphasizing/enhancing the position and role of feminine activities.

IPAPEL BC. Inspection provinciale de l’Agriculture, Pêche et Elevage de la Province du Bas-Congo. IPABEL BC is the Provincial Inspection Service of Agriculture, Fishing and Animal Breeding. It is in charge of the implementation of the provincial government policies and programs linked to agricultural development. IPAPEL is the most appropriate state structure to work with in order to develop the palm oil value chain in the province of Bas-Congo. IPAPEL has agronomists spread all over the province, even in the smallest and most isolated places. This offers a huge technical potential and cements durability.

Nguizani Platform nguizanikuami@yahoo.fr. The Nguizani Platform is a platform gathering 21 farmers associations located around Mbanza-Ngungu. The Nguizani platform could play an important role by organising honey and safou producers in small and medium enterprises (SME) in order to improve their revenue.

GRAED. Groupe de Recherche d’Actions et d’Etudes pour l’Ecodéveloppement graed_org@yahoo.fr. GRAED is a research and action group active around the Luki biosphere in the Bas-Congo province. GRAED has a wealth of experience in mobilising people in environmental, gender and community-based development projects. GRAED could play an important role by organising honey, mfumbwa and safou producers in small and medium enterprises (SME) in order to improve their revenue.

Levain des Masses levaindesmasses@yahoo.fr Levain des Masses is an umbrella organisation active in the Madimba territory. Ninety percent of Levain des Masses’s members are female NTFP producers and vendors. Being well organised, Levain des Masses has the ability to mobilise people and is often financed by the FAO and WHO. Levain des Masses could play an important role by organising honey and safou producers in small and medium enterprises (SME) in order to improve their revenue.

ADEI. Association pour le Développement Intégré adeiongd@yahoo.fr. ADEI is an umbrella organisation active in the Lukula territory. ADEI could play an important role by helping the producers of different NTFP (safou, honey, mfumbwa) organise themselves in SME. ADEI also sets up well structured sector platforms in order to improve the population’s living conditions.
