Debre Zeit - During his tour through Ethiopia, Dutch minister Koenders (Development Cooperation) visited a dairy and milk cooperative in Debre Zeit, which is supported by SNV. SNV demonstrated its value chain approach for private sector development whereby all actors (producers, processors, etc.) in the value chain are brought together. This has resulted in the establishment of the Ethiopian Milk Producers and Processors Association (EMPPA).
By bringing together these various actors, the monopoly of a limited number of processors dictating the low milk prices for the farmers, has been broken. New processors have entered into the market and as a result the milk price offered to the farmers has increased by 34%. Through trainings, the quality and quantity of the milk the farmers are supplying, has increased as well. Over 2,500 Ethiopian farmers are benefiting from this approach. Read more:
