
Jan holds a Master Degree in Public Policy and Management as well as a Master Degree in Rural Development Planning. He has over 25 years' experience in the development sector, specifically in Latin America, Africa, the Balkans andAsia. He first joined SNV as an Advisor in Ethiopia in 1988. Jan has since worked in a wide range of positions within the organisation, including stints as M&E Coordinator at Head Office, Country Director in Zimbabwe, Country Representative in Montenegro, and Head of Strategy and Partnerships for the Asia region based in Hanoi,Vietnam. He returned to Ethiopia as the Country Director in 2011.
Jan’s diverse roles and his long experience within the organisation has enabled him to develop a uniquely comprehensive perspective on SNV, our work and our history, with his most recent role spearheading Asia’s transition to an impact-oriented organization whose work and ambitions are supported by a diversified set of donors.
Jan has been part of the corporate trajectory 2015+, which will lead SNV to an appropriate place in the aid architecture, and says “Our strengths at SNV are the down-to-earth nature of the management, our team work and our trust in our colleagues”.
He also has a passion for localisation within SNV’s programmes, believing that development should be owned and driven locally, as well as an ongoing interest in public policy and the role of government in development.
