SNV has been present in West and Central Africa since the opening of the Cameroon office in 1963 and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) office in 2006, where we have spearheaded forest-environment sector interventions.

Beginning in 2011, SNV supported the execution of projects in other countries of the Congo Basin within the framework of the Congo Basin Forest Fund (CBFF). In 2013, SNV expanded its presence to include an active involvement in the execution of the Support Programme for the Conservation of Forest Ecosystems of the Congo Basin (PACEBCo).

As a technical partner of Pricewaterhouse Coppers (PwC), SNV participated as Fund Management Agent in the implementation of three regional projects in the Central African Republic (CAR) funded by the Congo Basin Forest Fund (CBFF) of the African Development Bank (AfDB). The CBFF/AfDB provides grant funds for interventions to mitigate the effects of climate change on forests of the Congo Basin in partnership with local people, communities and institutions.

SNV provides implementation support to Stichting FERN, working in partnership with a national partner (Brainforest) and the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to implement projects that will engage civil society actors at all levels in the national REDD process.

SNV also supports Bioversity International in a regional project that develops models for the sustainable management of forest concessions in the forest countries of the Congo Basin.

SNV implementation support to the beneficiaries of these five projects includes:

  • Organization of project launch and problem-solving events;
  • Quality assessment through periodic support missions;
  • Midterm review and final evaluations;
  • Systematic review and feedback on statutory periodic reports submitted by grantees;
  • Simplication of AFDB procedures and guidelines; and
  • Provide support to CBFF Secretariat staff posted in the Kinshasa, Yaoundé and Tunis hubs.

Through our expanded presence in the region, SNV hopes to strengthen collaboration with other development partners in Gabon and the wider Congo Basin in order to positively impact national and regional REDD+ processes.
