About us

Kenya is a land of contrasts. With a population of 36.1 million people, it is one of the highest exporters in East and Southern Africa, with a substantial slice of global horticulture and tourism markets. It has economically grown at a rate of between 5 percent and 6 percent in recent years, with a GDP of almost 14 billion Euros. Yet some 58 percent of the population live below the poverty line, mostly in rural areas. The vast majority of the country is classified as arid or semi arid and here more than 70 percent of people are poor. Across the board, inequity levels are growing.

SNV started work in Kenya in 1967. Our national and international advisors provide advisory services, promote the development and brokering of knowledge, and support policy dialogue at national level.  Our clients include government, local authorities, private sector, farmer groups and non-governmental organisations. Aligned with the Government of Kenya’s Vision 2030 and the Millennium Development Goals, we focus on exploiting opportunities in the agriculture (dairy, extensive livestock and horticulture), water, sanitation and hygiene, and renewable energy sectors.

To increase the effectiveness of our programmes and our resources, we actively engage in partnerships with other development agencies, as well as private and public sector organisations.
