Harm Duiker, Country Director
Harm holds a BSc in Tropical Forestry. He has 20 years of professional and managerial experience in international development work in the areas of programme design and portfolio management, water and sanitation, natural resource management, resource mobilisation and leadership. He worked in various countries including Cameroon, Niger, Mali and Vietnam.
He joined SNV in 1990 as forestry advisor in West Africa were he was leading external funded forestry and agricultural programs (World Bank, EU and DGIS). In Asia Harm supervised the set-up of a national Biogas program which became one of the flagship programs of Vietnam, this program was awarded with a prestigious international prize.
He furthermore initiated the design of different successful programs in the area of governance, land allocation and tourism and successfully mobilised funding from the Asian Development Bank, EKN and DGIS for those programs. The Government of Vietnam awarded him with a medal of merit for his contribution to the development of Vietnam. Within SNV Asia he was at regional level responsible for SNV Asia’s forestry knowledge network within this capacity he has successfully established partnerships with RECOFT, FAO, WWF and IUCN.
He joined SNV Kenya as a portfolio coordinator in May 2007 having served for six years as portfolio coordinator in SNV Vietnam. In his capacity as portfolio coordinator he is leading a team of 18 advisors and support staff in the North Rift region. The portfolio is supporting a vibrant selection of client constellations around dairy, horticulture, meat, tourism, water and sanitation, and education. At national level he is responsible for the Water and Sanitation sector team, his focus is on product development and partnerships. He successfully established a partnership with UNICEF which included an important resource mobilisation component.
At the regional level he is responsible for the strategic development of the Local Capacity Development Facility: an innovative capacity development approach aiming at making the current practice of budget support more responsive towards the sub-national level with a special attention for capacity building. His vision is that SNV will be recognized as one of the main capacity development organisations within the Water and Sanitation sector in Kenya.
Mary Njuguna- Kimwadu, Portfolio Coordinator, South Rift Portfolio
Mary is a development practitioner with 19 years experience, in development facilitation and more so management of development programmes. Her technical specialisation includes facilitating change management processes, institutional and organisational development, and governance, gender mainstreaming, children’s rights and agenda setting with multi-actor processes, across the sectors.
Prior to joining SNV, she worked as programmes coordinator with urban development programme at Undugu Society of Kenya. She also had a stint in coordinating partnerships with the AIDS Control and Prevention Project at Family Health International. She joined SNV in 1995 to initiate a Capacity development project to strengthen institutions for street children in 1995. Thereafter she worked as Institutional and Organisation Development /governance Advisor responsible for strengthening governance structures, creating institutional linkages and policy engagement involving civil society organizations, local authorities and private sector.
Mary was appointed Portfolio Coordinator in South Rift Portfolio in 2006. As member of management team, she contributes to strategy and partnership development and implementation. She also provides oversight for Economic Development Sector. Furthermore, Mary sits on technical team of the Civil Society of the year award (CSOYA-Kenya). She holds a BA in social work and is currently pursuing an MA in Gender & Development.
Mary is currently steering the initiation of the Local Capacity Development Facility in Kenya in collaboration with local partners. She is keen see to the fruition of efforts of localization of capacity development services in the Kenya. She has a passion for facilitating development processes in order to uplift quality of lives, especially those of minorities, women and children in Africa.
Gladys Kabura Mwangi, Portfolio Coordinator, Northern Kenya
Gladys joined SNV Kenya as a Portfolio Coordinator for Northern Kenya on 1st August, 2010. She brought 14 years of experience in development work with specific expertise in gender, governance, and complex emergencies. She had worked for both local and international NGOs and has unique skills in participatory research and analysis, and livelihoods development. She is passionate about using evidence to improve development and believes that this can happen if women have better opportunities and greater representation.
Gladys has lead teams at the Kenya Human Rights Commission and CARE International. She has also managed multi-country projects in Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Senegal, Malawi, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda, and has been involved in local and international campaigns to end Violence against Women. She has been the principal investigator for two research studies and is published. She has presented papers in several national and international conferences. She has successfully engaged parliamentarians to review and change legislation.
Gladys holds a Masters Degree in Counselling Psychology, a Bachelors degree in Economics and Sociology, a post graduate diploma in Human Resources Management, and a Certificate in International Human Rights Instruments.
Antony O. Muga, Country Controller
Antony joined SNV Kenya in December 1997 as an Assistant Administrator. Between April 2005 and June 2006, he not only worked as the SAP Finance/HR Administrator for ESA Region but also assisted the deployment manager in its roll out. Prior to joining SNV, Antony served as the Regional Accountant of a UNHCR funded Japanese INGO known as African Educational Fund International (currently known as ADEO) and was based in Rwanda and Tanzania with a brief stint in the Nairobi Office. Prior to this, he worked as a Senior Accountant and later as a Deputy Chief Accountant of Undugu Society of Kenya, a local NGO dealing with Street Children. As the Finance Officer, he has played a key role in the improvement of Finance and Accounting administration especially in Sudan, budget planning and monitoring and implementation of internal control procedures. Antony is currently in the process of finalising his MBA in Strategic Management from The Maastricht School of Management in The Netherlands. He also holds a Bachelor of Commerce – Finance Option degree from Catholic University of Eastern Africa, a Diploma in Business Management from the University of Nairobi and is also a Certified Public Accountant.
His passion is creation of sustainable development and at a personal level assists the less fortunate members of society especially children and youth.
Henry P. Mugane, Human Resources Officer
Henry graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and Kiswahili at Kenyatta University in 1991. Having began his career as a high school teacher his passion for professional management led him to undertake the Certified Public Secretary (CPS) K course which he completed in 1999 and an MBA in HR which prepared him for a career in human resource management.
Since 2000, Henry has served in senior human resources management / administrative positions in organisations like the Armed Forces Canteen Organization (AFCO), the Insurance Training and Education Trust, NAVNET and presently, SNV Kenya.
Henry has been with SNV since December, 2007. Until 30th April, 2008, he provided HR support services to SNV Kenya and Sudan. In May, 2008 he joined the ESA Regional HR Unit and successfully completed several projects including the ESA regional office help desk for “Total Reward” (implementation of a new compensation and benefits system and rolling out a new performance management system in line with SNV’s new strategy) and implementation of various HR assignments in Uganda, Ethiopia, Zambia and Sudan. In April, 2009 he took up the role of the Human Resource Officer for SNV Kenya. He is also helping SNV Sudan’s new HR department to kick off smoothly.
Henry is passionate about people, what they do and how they do it in order to bring about desired results. He believes in “Service above self” and applies himself fully while working with others to ensure realization of impact in an effective and efficient manner. He is a member of the Institute of Human Resource Managers of Kenya (IHRM) and the Institute of Certified Public Secretaries (ICPAS).
