On 18th March 2009, Caroline Toroitich of SNV Kenya presented a paper entitled Why is Corruption in the Water Sector a Gender Issue.pdf
She made the presentation during the Governance and Management Session focussing building a corruption resistant water sector. The session addressed the causes and consequences of corruption in the water sector, of which it was attributed to the rising costs of attaining the Water and Sanitation Millennium Development Goal. In her presentation, she pointed out the gender and social relations and the relationships to corruption.
The World Water Forum is organised by the World Water Council together with stakeholders every three years. The 2009 theme was Bridging the Water Divides. This year’s forum had participation from 155 countries with 25,000 participants drawn from UN agencies, Government (local and ministries of water, environment and sanitation) non-governmental organisations, learning and research institutions and private sector organisations.
