The biogas programme in Kenya is part of the Africa Biogas Partnership Programme, a partnership of the Netherlands Government, HIVOS and SNV. This programme will invest about €30 million for the construction of 70,000 biogas digesters in Burkina Faso, Senegal, Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. The programmes are managed by national implementation agencies.
SNV has been supporting Kenya National Federation of Agricultural Producers (KENFAP), the national implementation agency, to set-up a commercially viable and market oriented domestic biogas programme in Kenya. The target is to construct at least 8,000 biogas plants by 2013.
This model is being replicated in other renewable energy technologies notably solar and improved cook stoves. These will be used to compliment rural household energy needs with a specific focus on distribution models for the bottom of the pyramid.
