Livestock 

Livestock production accounts for approximately 10.5 of National GDP and 30% of Agricultural GDP.  It employs about 50% of the agricultural workforce and about 90% of the workforce in the Arid and Semi Arid Land areas. 

SNV’s focus is on extensive livestock and dairy. SNV’s work in the sector includes:

  • Producer group strengthening
  • Facilitating multi-stakeholder platforms
  • Market intelligence
  • Value chain financing
  • Strengthening value chain service providers
  • Effective public policy management

Extensive livestock

SNV aims to increase productivity, income and employment from the livestock sector for at least 45,000 people (producers, local traders, middlemen) in at least 10 districts in Kenya by 2012 through:

  • Improved service provision in livestock production
  • Improved access to livestock markets
  • Improved enabling environment for livestock production and marketing

Dairy

SNV aims to increase productivity, income and employment for 30,000 small holder farmers and young Small and Micro Enterprises engaged in service provision in the dairy sector through:

  • Improved milk value chain governance
  • Youth involvement
  • Access to and outreach of financial and technical support
  • Commercialisation and management of farmer owned enterprises
  • Efficiency in the camel milk supply chain and marketing
