Nepal - Facts & Figures

Nepal is a landlocked country (in between China and India) situated in South Asia. Nepal boasts a rich history and natural beuty including Mount Everest. However, it lags behind in terms of development and is currently ranked as the second poorest country in Asia, second only to Afghanistan. According to the World Bank’s Human Development Index, Nepal is ranked at 142 and is classified as a low income country.

Accordingly, Nepal’s economic output is very low due to insufficient resources, political instability and its close proximity to emerging markets such as India and China. Nepal GDP growth is predicted to be 2.8%, however its annual inflation rate is placed at 6.7%. Latest per capita annual income figures were reported at $383 (2007 estimate)

Nepal’s economy is still largely agrarian based which employs over 2/3 of the employment force. The second largest industry is tourism, as Nepal continues to capitalise on its beautiful landscapes and of course, the great Himalayan mountain range.
