Surya has been a long-standing employee of SNV, joining us back in September 1996 as a Natural Resource Management Officer.  Nowadays, Surya supports SNV’s work in value chain and institutional development of timber and non-timber forest products.  Specifically, Surya works to strengthen the capacity of SNV’s forest products sector clients, including government officers, civil society and private sector organisations and networks.  Surya works to promote inclusive, responsive and accountable forest governance mechanisms within the domain of decentralized process.  In addition, Surya works to improve forest policy by conducting extensive field visits in order to strengthen the capacity of clients’ ability to effectively advocate, document and disseminate best practices in the forestry sector.

Throughout his career in SNV, Surya has held a number of positions including Local Governance Officer, Programme Manager, Regional Coordinator, and Co-Portfolio Coordinator whereby he improved decentralised governance and empowered disadvantaged communities – specifically Dalits and women – to access resources and effectively advocate their rights in order to improve their livelihoods. Prior to joining SNV, Surya was the Senior Agro-forester Officer at CARE International where he worked to promote participatory forest management and promote on and off-farm entrepreneurship development and micro-credits to improve the socio-economic state of the rural poor.

Surya obtained his Masters degree in Natural Resource Management from the Asia Institute of Technology (AIT) in Thailand and a Masters in Public Administration (specialized in Rural Development) from the Tribhuvan University in Nepal.
