Governance for Empowerment

‘Governance for empowerment’ is the concept we use to underscore the value we place on gender equity and social inclusion of poor and marginalised groups as a vital component of sustainable development.

Governance for empowerment is also essential in making the choices we make. When working to improve basic services, our central focus on governance expresses itself in our capacity to work on effective relations between many actors to strengthen accountability and micro-macro linkages.   In addition, SNV pays close attention to marginalised groups who are negatively impacted to the inefficiency of basic services sectors. For example, due to lack of access to clean water and energy sources, women are forced to spend large parts of their day fetching water or firewood.

Governance for empowerment in production, income & employment is similarly cross-cutting. Here, we work on capacities of individual organisations and multi-actor platforms in the value chain to promote accountability, empowerment and broader governance goals. Accountability is achieved through direct relations – between producers and traders for example – and through institutional arrangements (like tourism regulations). Empowerment of poor producers in the value chain is a key objective - we are in a value chain not for the product, but rather to help poor people increase their employment and income opportunities.

In Nepal, SNV specifically focuses on ensuring inclusive access to basic services and income generating opportunities for excluded groups such as the (Madheshi) Dalits, disadvantaged Janajatis and women.
