In Nepal, a country where two-thirds of the population earn less than two dollars a day, cash crop productions are crucial in addressing poverty mitigation, especially in the rural and mountainous regions where agriculture is practically the only employment and income generating activity.
SNV’s underlying approach to initiate feasible interventions in the smallholder cash crops sector stems from our recognised position in Value Chain Development in order to provide additional benefits to stakeholders - especially smallholder farmers. SNV conducts comprehensive analysis in coordination with sector stakeholders to analyse the full range of activities, services and actors involved in producing, trading, processing and marketing of the commodity – from the input supply to the final consumer. This is followed by multi-stakeholder value chain development plan whereby SNV contributes with capacity strengthening of service providers and stakeholders at different levels of a specific value chain to make them competitive and creates a win-win situation for all actors of the chain. SNV also applies the Inclusive Business Approach that links companies directly with producers. SNV also organises value chain trainings in Nepal with participants from private and public organisations.
Our Objectives:
- Reducing poverty by selecting cash crops with high return and employment potentials especially for marginalised actors of the chain.
- Increasing social and environmental responsibility.
- Enabling effective social inclusion by addressing the needs of the disadvantaged and socially excluded groups within selected value chains.
Our Programmes:
-
High Value Agriculture Project for Hill and Mountain Areas: The project is being implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Government of Nepal and largely funded by the International Fund for Agricultural Development in 10 districts of Mid and Far-Western Nepal. HVAP aims that rural poor, especially women and marginalised groups, are integrated in high value agriculture and NTFP/MAP value chains and have improved income, employment opportunities and ability to respond to market demand and opportunities based on marketing agreements with private agribusiness. As a partner and technical assistance (TA) provider for HVAP, SNV offers its “Inclusive Business” approach as the key strategy to achieve project goals and objectives.
-
Raising Income for Small and Medium Farmers Project (RISMFP): The project is being implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives (MoAC) and funded by the Asian Development Bank. The project has an overall aim to increase on-farm incomes of small and medium farmers in the ten districts of Mid and Far Western Development Regions through promotion of High Value Crops. SNV has signed a MoU with MoAC/GoN to strengthen value chain and inclusive business component of the project. In collaboration with Agro-Enterprise Centre (AEC) of Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry and MoAC, SNV will contribute to (i) establish agribusiness facilities and market linkages for agriculture products; (ii) strengthen capacity on value chain and IB; (iii) knowledge management and dissemination, and (iv) monitoring and evaluation and result measurement for four years.
