Consultation Meeting on “Carbon Stock Assessment Activities in Viet Nam”

Hanoi - Technical Consultation Meeting on “Carbon Stock Assessment Activities in Viet Nam” was organised by LEAF team. Participants in this event included scientists, university lecturers, practitioners from Vietnam Academy of Forestry  Science, Vietnam Forestry University, Forest Inventory and Planning Institute, SNV, LEAF, Winrock International who are involved in carbon assessment in Vietnam. The meeting aimed to review existing forest carbon measuring status in Vietnam, and to identify what and how Winrock can provide best support in carbon assessment under the LEAF programme.

An overview of LEAF and carbon assessment activities was presented by LEAF Vietnam Manager.  Technical knowledge including Allometric Equation (AE) development for forest estimation, potential forest carbon monitoring design, stratification by carbon stock, and a case study in Guyana on cost effective approach for stratification in the context of REDD+ was shared and discussed.

The High Biodiversity REDD+ team also made an update on Participatory Forest Monitoring (PFM) pilot in Lam Dong province.  A TOT training on carbon stock assessment was organised in August 2012 for forest owners.

Further discussions were focused on how carbon assessment methodologies can be applied, what the gap is and what recommendations are for LEAF to provide its best carbon assessment support in Vietnam.
