Corporate Evaluation: SNV's Exit From Sectors

SNV’s exit from the education, tourism, forestry and health sectors is a major change facing the organisation. This evaluation was conducted in the period November 2011-March 2012. It assesses how the exit affected the results of SNV’s capacity development work in those sectors, considers the sustainability of client capacity, assesses knowledge transfer and provides an opinion as to what SNV could have done better to influence positively the consequences of its exit while taking into account specific contexts.

Corporate Evaluation: Transformation in SNV

SNV is diversifying its financial basis to become less dependent on its core, institutional funding it receives from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In that context, this external evaluation (conducted November 2011-February 2012) of SNV’s Latin America and Vietnam’s transformation towards a more market-oriented approach, with important findings and directives.

Turning Opportunity Into Reality in Rwanda

Rwanda is on its way to becoming an important service hub in East Africa’s economically vibrant market. Positioned in a resource-rich region, Rwanda has wagered on increasing its attractiveness for business through establishing a stable political environment with modern institutions and urban amenities. The cityscapes of Kigali as well as satellite towns such as Musanze, Huye, Rwamagana and Rubavu are changing almost daily.

However, livelihood in the rural areas still largely depends on subsistence farming. Embattled with low production levels coupled with the hardship of fetching water and firewood rural Rwandans are eager to find ways to earn a share in the country’s progress.

Working in close collaboration with the national authorities, SNV builds capacity and provides solutions for access to clean water and proper sanitation, renewable energy and agriculture. We contribute to local economic development through mobilising specialised knowledge and skills for management, better cultural practices, market linkages, improved accountability relations and favourable policies.

This document presents a bird’s eye view of how we work together with our partners to advance renewable energy, water, sanitation and hygiene and agriculture in Rwanda.

This Practice Brief highlights various approaches used to promote gender equality in the agriculture; water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH); and renewable energy (RE) sectors in Asian countries. SNV Asia has provided extensive capacity-building support in these sectors while putting ‘inclusive development’ at the forefront of the development agenda. The Practice Brief is an attempt to document practices from the field based on successful experiences of SNV in Bhutan, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Nepal and Vietnam. It aims to be a quick reference for development practitioners (within and outside SNV) who are committed to mainstream gender in these three sectors.

The Social Inclusion (SI) and Accountability Proofing Tool has been designed to help SNV advisors and other development practitioners consider and adequately address SI and accountability issues while planning, executing, monitoring and evaluating a programme or project. The tool has been structured around three key stages of project management: analysis and planning, implementation and monitoring, and evaluation. Therefore, the use of this tool is intended to be part of and add quality to the programme/project management process.
