Local entrepreneurs and small and medium-sized enterprises are the backbone of global economic activity. Improving their performance and sustainability is key to economic growth that is inclusive and reaches the majority of people.
The WBCSD and SNV entered into a strategic alliance in 2006. Through the promotion of ‘inclusive business models’ the partnership seeks to find profitable ways to engage the low-income segment in business operations that create sustainable livelihoods. Typically this comes about through:
- direct employment
- targeted development of supply chain opportunities
- the provision of affordable goods and services.
The partnership is currently promoting inclusive business models in eight Latin American countries: Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Peru. Other regions, especially in Africa, have already expressed interest in participating. The partnership will most probably be regionally extended in the near future.
“Through the inclusive business way of working, poor communities can be involved in business, not only as consumers, but also as employees, suppliers and small investors. This group can be strengthened so that they can look after their own economic interests, effectively. This concept works."
