Livestock is the most dynamic and primary sector in Niger, contributing to 12% to the overall GDP and 35% of gross domestic agricultural production. Although the promotion of the dairy trade is one of the priority issues of the Nigerien government, and milk plays a significant role in assuring food security, national dairy production does not satisfy local market demands. Key actors in the dairy and meat production branches, including socio-professional associations, therefore requested the support of SNV. SNV’s assignment was the development of informal structures into a formal sector network connecting a multitude of actors. SNV’s intervention was a milestone, bringing together stakeholders of the livestock and dairy industry with producers and government officials and facilitating an open dialogue.
