SNV organises International Biogas Event in Phnom Penh

Tuesday, August 24, 2010 5:51 AM

The Hague – From 10 to 12 November, SNV will join forces with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the German Agency for Technical Cooperation (GTZ) to host the international workshop “Financing National Programmes on Domestic Biogas in Asia” in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

SNV has been active in promoting domestic biogas since 1989 in Asia and since 2006 in Africa. One of the key features of the national biogas programmes we assist in the set-up and implementation of is our ‘multi-stakeholder sector development approach’.

SNV aims to share the knowledge it has gained and create a platform for discussion in order to facilitate the improvement and scaling up of domestic biogas initiatives worldwide. More than 75 biogas practitioners, experts and policymakers are expected to participate in the event to exchange knowledge and experiences in the rollout of domestic biogas programmes.

The Energy 4 All Working Group on Domestic Biogas, a partnership initiative of the ADB, will also hold its annual meeting at the event. The working group will lead country-based sessions to arrive at planning of production targets, estimated costs and proposed financing of national programmes on domestic biogas in Asia up to 2015/16. SNV was invited by the ADB to lead the working group, and has formulated a proposal to install one million biogas plants across the continent by 2015/2016.

SNV is actively encouraging the creation of market-based domestic biogas programmes in other countries and the  “Financing national programmes on domestic biogas in Asia” workshop will serve as an important platform to discuss effective use of public and private resources that contribute to viable domestic biogas sectors.
