Major presence of women at Agricultural Fair in Diber

Monday, October 05, 2009 12:30 PM
Peshkopi, 3rd October- Women producers were a major presence at the Harvest Feast Fair, organized in Peshkopi last Saturday. Out of 150 farmers who presented their products in the Fair, 50 were women. This represents a significant increase given the fact that in the previous three fairs, only 10 women have been present. Major parts of these women have been trained by Agritra- Vision Center, a former project of SNV created in 1999 to support rural women groups, mainly in agriculture and farming. Since 2001, Agritra-Vision is an independent NGO.

The Harvest Feast is an annual activity organized by the Regional Directorate of Agriculture, Food and Consumer Protection in close collaboration with farmers associations with the aim to promote local agroproducts. SNV has been supporting this activity since its inception four years ago.

“It feels good when you see farmers' associations asking to take over ownership of this kind of activities,- Dali Horeshka, SNV advisor says. “They now understand how important is to create linkages to the market and make themselves marketable. SNV’s hard work is being paid off”.

More than 2000 persons are estimated to have visited the Fair on Saturday.
