Uganda - 45,000 oilseed farmers in Uganda are set to benefit from an inclusive business partnership between SNV and Mukwano Industries.
SNV and Mukwano Industries have entered into a one-year partnership to promote growth and equity within the oilseed value chain in Uganda. The target for production is 100,000 metric tonnes valued at US$ 30 million at current exchange rates.
SNV will contribute to improvements in service provision to value chain actors, formation and strengthening of producer groups. SNV will also support Mukwano Industries to become a lead facilitator of oilseed sub-sector platforms and a provider of market information and intelligence to actors involved in the value chain.
Mukwano Industries will provide extension services, high quality inputs, competitive prices, assured markets and increased processing capacity and bulking facilities. Mukwano Industries will give special attention to the balance between house hold incomes and food security by offering similar services for maize production among all its farmers as a rotational crop between the sunflower seasons. This practice will not only ensure increased incomes and improved food security but also maintain the soil fertility.
In this partnership SNV will focus on four products including:
-
service provider strengthening
-
multi stakeholder platforms
-
producer group strengthening
-
market intelligence
Ultimately, this partnership will increase competitiveness, growth and equity for all actors across the oilseed value chain and especially enhance household incomes, productivity and employment with improved livelihoods among the farming communities within the cooperation outreach.
