Jeanette de Regt, SNV Uganda Country Director and Rudo Kwaramba, World Vision Uganda National Director after signing the memorandum of understanding.

On Monday 31st August 2009, SNV Uganda and World Vision Uganda signed a three year memorandum of understanding aimed at enhancing the quality of primary education and income generation.

This follows a successful one year partnership agreement between SNV Uganda and World Vision, The memorandum of understanding builds on the comparative strength of both parties with emphasis on Quality Enhancement in Primary Education and Income Generation. This liaison will ensure effective collaboration at both sub county and district levels in partnership with Local Governments.

Speaking at the memorandum of understanding signing, Ms. Jeanette de Regt, SNV Uganda Country Director said, “The partnership with World Vision has helped us in two distinct ways. First, closer working relationships with WVI, and with the local governments, allowed us to reach more children in schools than if we were working in isolation. Second, the partnership helped us to appreciate different perspectives to problems in the education system in the districts: working together means learning together.”

Mrs. Rudo Kwaramba, World Vision Uganda National Director said, “This three year partnership will not only enhance what was achieved in the areas of improving Primary School Performance, increased Pupils Enrolment and Retention and School Governance, but see the expansion to new areas of Eastern Uganda. That will include Mbale, Butaleja and Soroti Districts where joint interventions will encompass increased income generation activities among households. The lessons from the pilot sites in Kiboga and Bundibugyo in partnership with SNV is what will be rolled out in the other areas where WVI is operating. In the last year much as was achieved in the areas of Improving School.”

During the past year, SNV and World Vision International worked closely with the local governments (Districts and Sub counties) and school management committees resulting into closer supervision at the schools. This led to a reduction of both pupil and teacher absenteeism, and improvement in performance for both boys and girls.

This three year partnership will be implemented in the districts of; Bundibugyo, Soroti, Mbale, Bukwo, Kiboga, Mpigi and Rakai unlike the one year partnership, that was piloted in only the three districts of Bundibugyo, Rakai and Kiboga.
