SNV participated at the 5th International Conference on ICT for Development, Education and Training in Lusaka, Zambia, from 26 – 28 May 2010. The annual event for developing eLearning capacities in Africa provided a diverse ‘think-tank’ environment and platform for the many stakeholders in the process of linking ICT and education in Africa. These included Ministers for Education, Research and Technology experts, practitioners, teachers and representatives of the IT industry. In addition to presentations was a display for both hardware and software solutions to improving learning outcomes at the learner and teacher level.
Joseph Kipkoech Lang’at of SNV Kenya presented a paper entitled the E-Learning Transforms Lives of Street Children in Eldoret Kenya. The paper carried a story of how SNV in Kenya’s North Rift, in its strategy to improve access to education for the most vulnerable in the society, supported the Ex-Street Children Community Organisation (ECCO) in integrating ICT in their programmes (see the abstract at http://www.elearning-africa.com/newsportal/english/news219.php). This caught the attention of many participants who had a specific interest in the eLearning for the street children case. The objective of the presentation was to find donors for the Ex-Street Children Community Organisation. The presentation highlighted the problems facing the street children in Kenya, and the efforts made by the organisation through the support of SNV to use ICT to change the lives of the street children.
Present at the conference was a group of teachers from Kenya whose trip was jointly organised by Microsoft, International Conferences, Workshops and Exhibitions (ICWE), and SNV. The Kenyan High Commissioner to Zambia, H. E. Lazarus H. Amayo hosted the delegation to a banquet. Also present was Kenya’s Assistant Minister for Finance, Hon. Oburu Odinga and officials from the Ministry of Education.
