Renewable Energy in WCA

SNV is developing a comprehensive strategy to accelerate Renewable Energy access and generate improved revenues for populations across West and Central Africa (WCA). SNV has already begun to make considerable investments which will lead to our involvment in an increasing number and range of Renewable Energy projects and technologies in the region.

Large parts of the region are without access to basic energy services and most of the population rely on traditional fuel sources, such as wood, to meet their energy needs. There is a great need to stimulate Renewable Energy activity in WCA because deforestation is a large concern and populations are spending increasing amounts of money on, and time searching for, energy sources.

It is imperative to develop locally sensitive and appropriate technologies due to the diversity in the geological and climatic conditions across WCA, and therefore, also due to the variety of needs of populations living in these different regions. SNV's on-the-ground knowledge, as well as our experience from implementing RE activities in other parts of the world, ensures that we will apply suitable and effective technologies and approaches across WCA.

In addition to our Biogas projects in WCA, our current RE in the region include a feasibility study to determine a possible Improved Cook Stoves intervention in Burkina Faso, a technology which has a long, and often complicated, history in the country.
