Talking sustainable rural water services

The 6th Rural Water Supply Network (RWSN) Forum, which brought together over 500 delegates from over 50 countries, concluded in Uganda on 1st December  2011. The theme of the workshop wasRural Water Supply in the 21stCentury: Myths of the Past, Visions for the Future. The Forum was opened by Hon. Maria Mutagamba, Minister for Water and Environment of Uganda. Also present was Hon. Kebede Gerba, Minister of Water and Energy of Ethiopia.

The Forum offered a great opportunity for SNV to contribute to the on-going global debate on achieving sustainable rural water services at scale. SNV was represented at the forum by two senior advisors, Mr. Chiranjibi Tiwari of Kenya and Ms. Jacinta Nekesa of Uganda, who presented papers entitledProfessionalising Operations and Maintenance - The Way Forward to Sustainable Rural Water Services in KenyaandDistrict-based Hand Pump Mechanics Associations in Uganda for Improved Operation and Maintenance of Rural Water Supply Systems respectively.
