Track Record

In East and Southern Africa we work together with UNICEF, Water Aid and Concern on water point mapping initiatives. These give water ministries vital insight into the functionality of rural water points and enable them to identify where repairs are needed, an effective way of increasing access to safe drinking water. In Tanzania alone, this initiative covers over 55 districts.

Localised solutions

In Ethiopia and South Sudan we have brought together local partners to develop low-cost and hygienic menstrual hygiene pads. This market-based solution has created business opportunities for small local enterprises and has improved menstrual hygiene for 1,200 school girls. In Cambodia, we have developed an upgradable latrine which has the advantage that households on the basis of an initial investment have the opportunity to spread investment over time.

Scale

SNV works in WASH in 25 countries, with more than 300 partners. In 2010 and 2011, SNV, its network of local partners and IRC, reached 247,000 people and 130 schools through the implementation of the Sustainable Sanitation and Hygiene for All programmes in rural areas in Nepal, Bhutan, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia.

Awards

Four out of the eight winners of the 2010 AMCOW AfricaSan Awards were local partners of SNV in Ethiopia and Zambia.
